How to download poppy playtime for free

The actual free option (kinda)

So Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 used to be completely free on Steam for a while back in 2021. MOB Games did this to build hype and it worked ridiculously well – the game blew up on YouTube with something like 400+ million views across gaming channels in the first few months. Crazy numbers for an indie horror game.

Now though? Chapter 1 costs $4.99 on Steam. Chapters 2 and 3 are $9.99 each. Not exactly expensive but not free either.

There’s a mobile version that’s supposedly free with ads, but honestly I haven’t tried it myself and the reviews are mixed. People complain about the controls being janky and the ads being super intrusive. Your call whether that’s worth it.

When Steam actually has deals

Here’s something useful – Poppy Playtime goes on sale pretty regularly during the big Steam events. I’m talking Summer Sale (June/July), Winter Sale (late December), Halloween sale (obviously perfect timing for a horror game). I’ve seen Chapter 1 drop to like $2.49, sometimes even $1.99.

The trick is adding it to your Steam wishlist. Then you get an email notification the second it goes on sale. I do this with basically every game I’m interested in because why pay full price when you can wait 2 months and get it 50% off?

Black Friday is another good time to check. Last year (2024) I think the whole bundle was discounted around 30-40% but don’t quote me on the exact percentage.

Game subscription services

Xbox Game Pass doesn’t have it (I checked last month). PlayStation Plus doesn’t have it either. So that route’s a dead end unfortunately.

The “watch someone else play it” option

Look, I know this sounds dumb but hear me out. Poppy Playtime is basically designed to be watched. The whole game is like 2-3 hours per chapter max. CoryxKenshin, Markiplier, IGP – tons of YouTubers have full playthroughs with no commentary options too if you don’t want someone screaming in your ear the whole time.

Is it the same as playing? No. But it’s free and you get the full story. Plus some of these creators are genuinely entertaining. Markiplier’s playthrough of Chapter 1 has over 36 million views for a reason.

What about those “free download” websites?

Yeah no. Don’t do it.

I’m not going to lecture you but those sites are almost always:

  • Loaded with malware
  • Fake downloads that just lead to more sketchy sites
  • Sometimes actual viruses disguised as game files

One of my friends tried downloading a “cracked” version of some game last year and ended up with a cryptominer that fried his GPU. A GTX 1660 Super. Completely dead. He paid way more fixing his PC than the game would’ve cost.

MOB Games is literally just a small indie studio. They’re not EA or Activision raking in billions. Supporting them directly means we actually get Chapter 4 and beyond.

Mobile version specifics

The mobile port (iOS and Android) is listed as “free” but it’s one of those free-to-play models. You get Chapter 1 free with ads, then you have to pay for the other chapters. Some people report the ad frequency isn’t that bad, others say it ruins the atmosphere completely.

The touch controls are apparently pretty rough for the puzzle sections. Makes sense since the game was designed for keyboard and mouse.

My actual recommendation

Just wait for a Steam sale and buy Chapter 1 for $2-3. That’s like one coffee. You support the devs, you get the full experience without ads or viruses, and you can actually play it yourself instead of watching someone else do it.

If you literally cannot afford $2-3 right now, watch a playthrough on YouTube and buy it later when you can. The game isn’t going anywhere.

There’s also the option of Steam’s refund policy – you can play any game for under 2 hours and refund it if you want. Is that ethical? Debatable. But it’s within Steam’s rules. You’d basically be using it as a free demo. Chapter 1 can definitely be finished in under 2 hours if you rush.

The Steam winter sale is coming up in about 6 weeks anyway. Just add it to your wishlist and wait.
