Apple Continues to Have Scammy Apps in its Digital Shops
- 18 Apr 2022
It seems that Apple continues to have problems with scammy applications entering its digital space. At first, such apps were noticed in the selection for iPhone, but now it seems that scammy services can be used on Mac.
Kosta Eleftheriou, a developer and scam app hunter, has discovered a range of very suspicious apps that have been added to the App Store. Such applications use annoying pop-ups that prevent the user from easily quitting the app. The applications scam users by making them join subscription services to be able to close them. The worst part is that Apple doesn’t seem to notice such problems despite its strict process of screening all apps that enter the stores.
One of the apps that started the entire process of looking for scammy apps was started by the My Metronome app. The problem with the app has been discovered by Edoardo Vacchi who shared the information with the public. As it turned out, when you want to leave this application, it locks up and doesn’t let you use the menu or keyboard unless you agree to the monthly subscription that costs $9.99. It is possible to force quit this app, but not everyone knows how to do that. At the moment, there are plenty of apps in the App Store that use a similar approach to scam unsuspecting users.
While many users can have their way around such apps, it is still strange how Apple allows such applications to get in despite its rigorous screening that prevents many trustworthy developers from adding their services. Eleftheriou has already found a range of games that don’t have a place in the App Store. Examples include gambling apps disguised as children’s games and also applications that don’t work unless you give a 5-star rating.
